Configuring the Simped Rudders for the Cougar
If you want to use Simped Rudders with the HOTAS Cougar, first of all, make sure that the connector that plugs into the Cougar joystick has the following switches set:

  • S1 = ON
  • S2 = off
  • S3 =ON
  • S4 = off
Secondly, you will then need to make a small adjustment in the configuration file to get the most out of the rudders. To do so, just follow these easy-to-understand steps:

STEP 1: Open the HOTAS.INI file.

If you do not know where the HOTAS.INI file is, it will be located in the same directory as you chose when you installed the HOTAS Cougar software. The file is most probably located in the directory: C:\Program Files\HOTAS\. If you still cannot find it, simply do a search on your computer for the HOTAS.INI file. Once you have found it, simply double click on the file to open it.

STEP 2: Find the line in the files that says: RCSType=0

STEP 3: Edit that line to read: RCSType=1

STEP 4: Save and close the HOTAS.INI file.

NOTE: These steps can be done with your HOTAS Cougar and rudders already plugged in. However, if you decide not to plug them in right away, you need to plug the rudders into the HOTAS Cougar and then the HOTAS Cougar into your computer, before performing step 5.

STEP 5: Open the HOTAS CCP software and press on the 'Apply' button.

This will send the new configuration to the HOTAS. Your Simped Rudders are now ready to be used.

NOTE: Just a reminder, if you ever decide to change your rudders, you will need to change the HOTAS.INI file back to the original setting.

Enjoy.
Quick aside from James: There's an interesting discussion on the Simped rudders in this thread on Cougar World: OT (slightly...): Why the Simpeds Fit Best To Your Cougar.
